Something From Shari's Past (Nothing that you expect :P )

Shari has always been an animal lover and will always be. She has adopted 1 cat, 2 rabbits and rares 9 goldfishes, 3 kois and 2 herkims. She stops at the walkways, even when she's dressed in a sharp executive suit just to pat a stray cat or ask how it is. Shari doesn't care if people think its crazy, coz it takes refined people to appreciate life and its wonders. Animals share this world with us and it is sad how sometimes they have been ousted from their own 'territory' just to make way for us. What is worse is how humans treat these animals. Some have no respect at all and feel no guilt kicking a stray or even killing it.

I remember I was in primary school when this incident happened and I never could understand how cruel humans can be till that faithful day.

There was a stray dog in the vicinity, a black bitch to be more precise, and it was pregnant. The day came when she had her babies and she had them at the playground. I guess it was this very choice that caused the end to everything. I supposed not many parents, esp those who are less educated, find it necessary to educate their children on the need to respect animals. The children still went to play at the playground and i suppose being curious this Indian girl abt 9 or 10 went to disturb one of the puppies. Being a mother and sensing danger, the bitch bit her arm. Her arm wasn't bleeding. And it was clear that the bitch was acting on motherly instinct.

The child's father was nearby and he did the most cruel thing anyone can imagined. He got so angry, he picked up a puppy from the litter of 5 and flung it hard against the wall. Right in front of its mother's eyes. I know some of you who read this might think that I am being too sensitive. But I was still very young then and i knew what he did was not right. Yes, I am not a parent and if that ever happens to my child i would definitely react. I would scold my daughter for being so foolish to disturb the puppy. I wouldn't cold heartedly pick up another being's kid and kill it in front of its very own eyes. Can u imagine if that is done to your own kid? Just coz it's a dog does not mean it has no feelings. Just coz it has more than one baby does not give anyone the right to kill any.

What I really couldnt understand was what exactly was the value that this father trying to incalcate in his child? Someone hurts you and i will kill? Is that how love is supposed to be shown? The bitch was helpless, it did not react when he threw her puppy against the wall. But after that, i did see her go to the puppy and lick it. I know it did not survive that wall but imagine how much pain was going through her at that time. We see mothers cry when their babies fall and get hurt, they get exremely depressed when they loose their babies.

This feeling is definitely not exclusive to human mothers, it's same with animals. The man had no right to hurt the puppy but he did and he went a step further by calling the Primary Production Department to get them to pick up the bitch and puppies, which they did. I am quite sure they would all have been put to sleep.

This happened over 20 years ago but the memory of it is still etched in my mind clearly. It pains me each time i remember it. But looking back at things, fate had to take its course. I can only imagine how those poor puppies would have been further subjected to abuse by more children and adults if they were left there.

Singapore is a great place for lots of things but it's not a great place if you are a stray. You will be abused, culled and dont ever expect to have locals appreciate your exisitence. This society we live it has forgotten how to respect other living things. They are too self-centred and if they find that it doesnt fit into their so-called ideal world, it should be gotten rid of by any means even if it means killing it.
